The Best High Fiber Dog Food

Dog Food in a Bowl

Dogs need fiber just as much as humans do. It’s crucial to creating and maintaining gastrointestinal health in our four-legged family members.

High fiber diets help dogs with a lot of things, including:

  • Relieving constipation
  • Helping maintain regular, pain-free bowel movements
  • Encouraging a super healthy gut microbiome

Many dog foods lack adequate fiber. And this is a HUGE problem for many reasons. Besides the obvious side effect of constipation and painful poops, a dog lacking fiber can suffer from

  • Diarrhea
  • Blocked anal glands
  • Weight issues
  • Colon diseases

It’s easy for backed up bowels to turn into serious health conditions down the line, so keeping your doggy regular is important to her quality of life.

The easiest way to do this is to feed your dog the best high fiber dog food out there.

I’ve looked all over for the best options out there, and even tried a few with my beautiful, 3-year-old Doberman, Karla. So here’s what me and Karla found to be the best of the best.

For dogs with sensitive stomachs and skin issues…

Picky eaters and dogs with sensitive stomachs need the pawfect blend of nutrient density and fiber to keep everything flowing regularly.

I tried the #1 vet recommended dog food with Karla–she has itchy skin from time to time and sometimes her coat becomes slightly dull Hill’s Science Diet (sensitive stomach and skin formula) kept Karla’s coat glossy and healthy. She was the dog equivalent of that glowing skin look.

I first heard of this dog food from a friend. After trying numerous dog foods, my friend and her vet concluded that her dog was having an allergic reaction to her food. The vet suggested Hill’s.

Her allergies quickly disappeared. She stopped biting at her paws and scratching herself so much. She’s been on the food for a year now and her fur is growing so thick and soft!

Plus, the high-fiber is easy to digest. It makes her stool easy to pass and to pick-up.

For dogs that already struggle with digestive issues…

One sign of a gut or elimination issue is problems with the anal glands. When your dog goes poop, they contract their muscles around the anus. The muscle contractions along with any pressure put on the anal glands from the stool helps the anal glands empty.

Dogs with diarrhea and small or soft stools can have trouble emptying their anal glands because there isn’t enough pressure. When the anal glands are filled, this can become painful for your dog. Some dogs even get infections or abscesses.

You have to make sure your dog poops good! Bernie’s Perfect Poop is awesome for stool issues. It’s high in fiber and comes in a yummy cheddar cheese flavor! The soft chews have all the good stuff to keep your pup happy–fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and enzymes. It’s the best for healing the gut and reversing any current gut issues.

For dogs who need a high protein diet…

Protein is the building block of muscles. Vet recommended Taste of the Wild provides a great balance between high fiber and high protein.

My Karla absolutely loved it! She was used to chicken and beef as her protein in dog food. But Taste of the Wild is made with bison and venison. This was such a treat for Karla. She ate every last bite.

Besides helping build lean muscle mass, this food is jam-packed with superfoods, antioxidants, and fatty acids. They’ve even use a proprietary probiotic formula to keep your pup pooping normally.

And, by the way, this formula is grain-free, meaning no fillers. You’re paying for real food.

For dogs going grain free…

Grains are the most common source of fiber, but they are not the only ones.

The fiber in whole grains is a prebiotic. It helps feed, grow, and maintain healthy bacteria in your dog’s intestines. Keeping the gut flora in balance helps to keep your dog regularly and makes passing stools effortless.

But your dog can still receive the benefits of prebiotic and probiotics without the grain. Going gain free can mean your dog has a shinier coat, healthier skin and better teeth. Eliminating grains can also lead to better smelling breath (and more snuggling time!).

Along with Taste of the Wild, another great grain free option comes from Canidae Pure. Their keto-inspired dog food is simple: real salmon, salmon meal, menhaden fish meal, sweet potatoes, peas, canola oil, suncured alfalfa, and potatoes. That’s it!

The simplicity of ingredients, lack of fillers, and real nutrient-dense food makes it an easy buying choice. My Karla LOVES the salmon and sweet potato one. But Candea Pure makes a lot of other flavors too.

It makes me feel good to know Karla’s getting the high-quality, high fiber food she deserves. Bernie’s is also grain-free too.

Dietary fiber is key to your dog’s health. A good high fiber food can help prevent a host of problems like:

  • Leaky gut
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Itchiness and skin infections

Finding a high fiber food is key to increasing your dog’s quality of life and keeping their bodies healthy for a long time to come.

Every dog is unique. They all have a different palette and preference for food. But one thing is the same–all dogs need plenty of fiber to meet their needs. Give a few of these a try and, don’t forget, food is the best preventative medicine!

For dogs who love the outdoors…

So let’s say you and your babe are playing outside with the frisbee. Your pup is starting to slow down and doesn’t seem interested in playing anymore. He starts looking around – sniffing.

You know something’s not right and now you’re on the lookout – total “mom mode.” Your baby trots over to an overgrown grass patch and starts chowing down.

And you may be thinking “um… what?”

If your doggy is outside with a tummy ache chances are he’s going to look for a cure. Dogs are our little detectives afterall. If your doggo begins to munch on some outside vegetation don’t be alarmed.

It’s very common for dogs to eat grass in attempts to aid their digestive system. Grass is rich in fiber and can help clear blockages and the nagging rumbling tummy too.

Besides, dogs are omnivores – which means they eat plants and meat. Just another thing you (assuming you eat meat) and your loveable pup have in common.

Just pay attention to how your pup reacts after grazing on the grass. Some dogs actually prefer having more plants integrated into their diets. Your dog may not even be feeling sick, he may have just taken a time out for a delicious snack.

And one last tip

-monitor your dog’s stress levels. The best food, supplements and preventive medical care can go far. But stress can wreak havoc on health. Just like us humans, stress can lead to health issues.

Keep your pup cool, calm, and regular! Try one of the foods above. They are the best high fiber dog foods I’ve found and my Karla endorses many of them!
